The Grass Foundation is a private, non-profit charitable institution under Section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code and Chapter 180 of the General Laws of Massachusetts. The purpose of the Foundation, as stated in the bylaws is "to assist in advancing knowledge principally in the field of neurophysiology, and including allied fields of medicine and science."

The Foundation's financial records are audited annually by a firm of certified public accountants.
